What to Expect on Your Fall Farm Tour

Your two-hour visit is designed to be both relaxing and informative, giving you a genuine look at how a small diversified farm prepares for the harvest season. The tour begins with a warm welcome and a brief orientation, then moves through the orchard and farmstead at a comfortable pace. You will see mature apple trees heavy with fruit, learn how we manage pests and soil health without unnecessary inputs, and hear the story of how this land has been farmed across the seasons. The apple cider pressing demonstration is a highlight for many guests: you will watch fresh apples being washed, ground, and pressed into juice, and you may even get to turn the press yourself if you like. The short introduction to Apple Farming covers the basics of variety selection, pruning, pollination, and harvest timing, with plenty of time for questions. Because the tour is limited to a small group, you will have direct access to your guide and a chance to see the farm up close rather than from behind a rope.

After the guided portion, you are welcome to use the picnic site for a snack or a packed lunch. The picnic area is shaded and has simple tables; please carry out everything you bring in. If you would like to pick apples, you can purchase a half peck bag on site for $20 with cash or credit card. The picking area is separate from the tour route, and our staff will point you in the right direction. Keep in mind that apple availability changes daily, so the varieties you can pick will depend on what is ripe that week. We encourage you to ask about the best-tasting varieties for fresh eating versus baking. The tour runs rain or shine, so please dress for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes that can handle uneven ground and a little orchard mud.

Planning Your Visit: Timing, Arrival, and Check-In

Your reservation is for the specific date and time shown: September 17, 10 am to 12 pm. Please plan to arrive early enough to park and check in at least 10 minutes before the tour begins. The check-in area is near the main farm stand, and a staff member will greet you and verify your order number. Because all sales are final and no refunds or transfers are allowed, double-check your calendar before purchasing. If you are running late, we will do our best to help you join the group, but the tour will start on time and we cannot delay the group for late arrivals. Parking is included in your reservation, and the lot is a short walk from the check-in point. If anyone in your party has mobility concerns, please let us know when you arrive; we can suggest the easiest route to the picnic area and the most accessible parts of the tour route.

Your email confirmation from Ecwid contains an order number, and that number is all you need to check in. No paper tickets will be mailed. If you do not see the confirmation in your inbox, check your spam or promotions folder before contacting us. You can also log into your Ecwid account to view your order history. For groups, one order number can cover everyone in your party, but each paying person aged 4 and up should be counted in the quantity when you purchase. Kids aged 3 and under are free and do not need a ticket, but they must be accompanied by a paying adult. The quantity limit is set to keep each tour small and personal, so if you are trying to book for a large group and the system will not allow it, consider splitting your group across two different tour times or contacting us well in advance to discuss options.

Apple Picking: How It Works and What It Costs

Apple picking is not included in your $5 tour reservation, but it is available as an add-on when you are here. A half peck bag costs $20 and holds roughly 5 to 6 pounds of apples, depending on the variety and size. You can pay for the bag with cash or credit card at the farm stand before you head into the picking area. One bag is usually enough for a family to enjoy fresh eating for several days, plus a pie or a batch of applesauce. If you want more than one bag, you are welcome to purchase additional bags while supplies last. We do not offer a discount for bringing your own bags because the half peck bag is a specific volume and helps us keep the picking area organized. The picking area is clearly marked, and staff will show you which rows are open on the day of your visit. Please pick only from the rows that are flagged as ready, and be gentle with the trees: twist the apple upward rather than pulling straight down, and leave the stem attached to the fruit if you can. Apples that fall to the ground should be left for wildlife or compost; do not put them in your bag.

Because apple ripening is weather-dependent, the varieties available on September 17 may differ from what was available the week before or the week after. Early fall is typically a great time for Gala, Honeycrisp, and McIntosh in our region, but we do not guarantee any specific variety. If you have your heart set on a particular apple, ask at the farm stand before you buy a picking bag. The staff can tell you what is sweet, what is tart, and what holds its shape in a pie. Children are welcome in the picking area, but they must be supervised at all times. Ladders are not provided for guests; most of our trees are pruned to a height that allows picking from the ground or with a short reach. If you are visiting with a stroller or wagon, the rows are wide enough for most, but the ground can be uneven, so use caution.

Farm Policies and Good Neighbor Guidelines

Crosscut Farm & Orchard is a working farm, not a theme park. That means you will encounter uneven paths, farm equipment, insects, and weather. Please stay with your group during the guided portion and follow the instructions of your tour leader. The farm is home to bees, birds, and other wildlife; do not disturb hives, nests, or any animals you see. Smoking and vaping are not permitted anywhere on the property, including the parking area and picnic site. Outside alcohol is not allowed. Pets are not permitted on the farm, with the exception of trained service animals as defined by law. If you bring a service animal, please keep it on a leash and under control at all times. The orchard and picnic areas are not fenced, so children should stay within sight of an adult. We reserve the right to ask any guest to leave if their behavior endangers themselves, others, or the farm; no refund will be issued in that case.

Because all sales are final, we cannot offer refunds or time/date transfers for any reason, including illness, weather, or scheduling conflicts. This policy allows us to keep tour sizes small and predictable, and it is clearly stated at checkout. If you purchase a reservation and later realize you cannot attend, you are welcome to give your order number to a friend or family member; the order number is all they need to check in. We do not require the original purchaser to be present. If a tour is canceled by the farm due to extreme weather or an emergency, we will contact you at the email address on your order and offer a refund or a transfer to a future date. We will never cancel for light rain or normal fall weather, so come prepared with layers and a rain jacket if the forecast looks damp. The farm is beautiful in all weather, and the cider press demonstration is under cover.

More Ways to Experience the Orchard This Season

If September 17 at 10 am does not work for your schedule, we offer several other fall farm tours and u-pick events throughout the season. Each tour follows the same general format: a guided walk, an apple cider pressing demonstration, a short talk on apple farming, and access to the picnic area. The main difference is the date and time, and occasionally the varieties that are ready for picking. You can browse the other available dates on our online store, including September 21, 10 am - 12 pm Fall Farm Tour, September 16, 10 am - 12 pm Fall Farm Tour, September 16, 1 pm - 3 pm Fall Farm Tour, and September 16, 3 pm - 5 pm Fall Farm Tour. For those who want a more hands-on picking experience with a longer time in the orchard, we also offer October 1st U-pick and Demo 1 PM -3PM and October 1st U-pick and Demo 3 PM -5PM. These u-pick events include a picking bag in the price and are a great choice for families who want to fill their own bag at their own pace.

If you are new to farm visits, a fall farm tour is a wonderful introduction. You will learn how apples are grown and pressed, see the orchard in its most beautiful season, and leave with a deeper appreciation for where your food comes from. The $5 per person fee is intentionally low to make the experience accessible, and the small group size means you will not feel rushed. Many guests tell us they had no idea how much work goes into a single glass of cider, and that the pressing demonstration was the highlight of their visit. Whether you come for the education, the photo opportunities, or simply a peaceful morning outdoors, we are glad to have you. If you have questions that are not answered on this page, please check the rest of our website or reach out through the contact information listed on the main farm page. We look forward to seeing you at the orchard.
