What to Expect on Your Fall Farm Tour

Your two-hour visit to Crosscut Farm & Orchard is designed to be both relaxing and enriching. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be greeted by the crisp autumn air and the sight of our orchards beginning their seasonal transformation. The tour is structured to give you a genuine behind-the-scenes look at how a working farm operates during the harvest season, while still leaving plenty of room to wander, ask questions, and simply enjoy the landscape.

The experience begins with a short introduction to apple farming. Our knowledgeable staff will walk you through the basics of orchard management, including how we care for our trees throughout the year, the role of pollinators, and what makes our growing practices unique. This is a great opportunity to learn about the difference between apple varieties, how weather affects the crop, and what goes into producing the fruit you’ll see hanging from the branches. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just curious about where your food comes from, you’ll come away with a deeper appreciation for the work that happens before an apple ever reaches your table.

Following the introduction, you’ll have the chance to watch an apple cider pressing demonstration. This hands-on display shows how fresh apples are transformed into delicious cider using a traditional press. You’ll see the entire process from washing and grinding the fruit to pressing out the juice. The aroma alone is worth the visit, and you’ll likely find yourself inspired to try making your own cider at home. While we can’t guarantee samples, the demonstration is a highlight for many visitors and a wonderful way to connect with the season’s bounty.

Planning Your Visit: Timing, Parking, and Check-In

To make the most of your reservation, we recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before your scheduled tour time. This allows you to park, check in, and get oriented without feeling rushed. The tour begins promptly at 10:00 am, and as noted in the important info, all guests must be parked and checked in 10 minutes prior to the start time. This ensures that we can begin on schedule and that everyone has a chance to settle in before we set off.

Parking is included with your reservation, and our lot is located a short walk from the main gathering area. Once you’ve parked, simply follow the signs to the check-in point. You’ll need to have your proof of purchase ready—either printed or on your phone—so we can quickly verify your order. The order number from your Ecwid confirmation email is all you need; no paper tickets will be sent. If you have any trouble locating your confirmation, please check your spam or junk folder before contacting us, as emails occasionally end up there.

After check-in, you’re welcome to explore the picnic site while you wait for the tour to begin. The picnic area is a lovely spot to enjoy a snack or simply take in the view of the orchard. We ask that you please be mindful of the schedule and gather at the designated meeting point a few minutes before the tour starts. This helps us keep the group together and ensures that everyone gets the full experience.

Apple Picking: How It Works and What to Bring

While apple picking is not included in your tour reservation, it is available for purchase on site. For $20, you can pick a half peck bag of apples—roughly 5-6 pounds—directly from our orchard. This is a wonderful way to extend your visit and take home a taste of Crosscut Farm. You can pay for apple picking with cash or credit card at the designated picking area, and our staff will be happy to point you toward the ripest varieties on the day of your visit.

If you plan to pick apples, we recommend bringing a few essentials. Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as the orchard ground can be uneven. A hat and sunscreen are also wise, even on overcast days, as you’ll be spending time outdoors. A reusable water bottle is a good idea to stay hydrated, and if you’re bringing young children, consider a small backpack for any extra layers or snacks. Please note that outside bags and containers are not permitted in the picking area; all apples must be picked into the bags we provide.

For families, apple picking is often the highlight of the day. Kids love reaching for the low-hanging fruit and filling their bags with apples they’ve chosen themselves. It’s a hands-on way to connect with the farm and create lasting memories. Just remember that children aged 3 and under are free to accompany a paying adult, but they must be supervised at all times, especially around the trees and equipment.
