What to Expect on Your Fall Farm Tour

Your two-hour visit to Crosscut Farm & Orchard is designed to be both relaxing and enriching. After you check in at the welcome table near the main barn, your group will be guided by one of our experienced farm educators. The tour unfolds at a comfortable pace, with plenty of time for questions, photographs, and simply soaking in the autumn atmosphere. You will walk through the orchard rows, learn about the life cycle of apple trees, and discover how our farm manages pests and soil health without unnecessary chemicals.

The highlight for many guests is the apple cider pressing demonstration. Using a traditional hand-crank press, we will show you how fresh apples are transformed into sweet, unfiltered cider. You will see the entire process from washing and grinding to pressing and bottling. While we cannot offer samples of the raw cider due to food safety regulations, the aroma alone is worth the visit. After the demonstration, you are welcome to purchase pasteurized cider from our farm stand to enjoy at the picnic site.

Because the tour includes walking on uneven ground, we recommend sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. The orchard can be muddy after rain, and the sun can be strong even in September. A hat, sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle are good ideas. Strollers are permitted but may be difficult to push on grass and gravel paths. The picnic site is shaded and has tables, so you are welcome to bring a snack or lunch to enjoy before or after your tour.

Planning Your Visit: Arrival, Parking, and Check-In

Your reservation is for a specific time slot, and we ask that you arrive at least 10 minutes early to park and check in. The farm entrance is clearly marked from the main road, and parking is free in the designated field. A staff member will direct you to a spot. From the parking area, follow the signs to the check-in table near the red barn. Have your order confirmation ready—either printed or on your phone—so we can quickly verify your reservation. The order number from your Ecwid confirmation email is all you need.

Please note that all sales are final and no refunds or time/date transfers are allowed. This policy helps us manage group sizes and ensure a quality experience for everyone. If you are running late, call the farm office as soon as possible; we will do our best to accommodate you, but we cannot guarantee entry after the tour has departed. Groups larger than 10 people should contact us in advance to discuss private tour options.

Once checked in, you will receive a brief orientation and a map of the farm. Restrooms are available near the barn and at the picnic area. The tour begins promptly at the scheduled time, so please be ready to walk at that moment. If you have mobility concerns, let us know at check-in; we can suggest shorter routes or provide a chair at the demonstration area.

Apple Picking and U-Pick Reservations

While the Fall Farm Tour does not include apple picking, you can add a U-pick experience on the day of your visit. A half peck bag costs $20 and can be purchased at the farm stand with cash or credit card. The U-pick orchard is a short walk from the tour meeting point, and our staff will show you which rows are open for picking. Availability depends on the season and weather, so we recommend checking our October 1st U-pick and Demo page for more details or to reserve a dedicated U-pick time slot.

If you know you want to pick apples, consider booking one of our combined U-pick and demonstration events, such as the October 1st U-pick and Demo 3 PM -5PM. These sessions include a guided picking experience and a cider pressing demo. For a more traditional tour without picking, our September 21, 10 am - 12 pm Fall Farm Tour is a great alternative.

Remember that apple picking is weather-dependent and subject to crop availability. We practice sustainable harvesting, so some varieties may be limited. Children must be supervised at all times in the orchard, and only fruit from designated rows may be picked. Ladders are provided for reaching high branches, but please use them with care. Apples are sold by the bag, not by weight, so you can fill your half peck as full as you like—as long as the bag closes!

Family-Friendly Activities and Picnic Tips

Crosscut Farm & Orchard is a family-owned operation, and we love seeing children explore the farm. The tour is designed to be engaging for all ages, with hands-on elements like touching apple blossoms (in season), smelling fresh cider, and feeling the texture of different apple varieties. Kids 3 and under are free with a paying adult, but please keep them close during the walking portions. The picnic site is a great place to let little ones run off energy after the tour.

If you plan to picnic, we recommend bringing a blanket or tablecloth, as tables are limited. You are welcome to bring your own food and non-alcoholic drinks. Alcohol is not permitted on the farm. Trash and recycling bins are provided; please help us keep the farm clean by packing out what you pack in. Dogs are not allowed on the farm, except for service animals.

For those who want to extend their visit, the farm stand offers fresh apples, cider, honey, and seasonal produce. You can also pre-order a pie or other baked goods for pickup after your tour. Check our website for current availability. If you are looking for another tour time, consider our September 16, 1 pm - 3 pm Fall Farm Tour or the morning session.

More Ways to Experience the Farm

If your preferred date is sold out, don't worry—we offer multiple tour times throughout the fall season. In addition to the September 20 tour, you can join us on September 16, 3 pm - 5 pm or check our calendar for later dates. Each tour follows the same format, but the orchard changes week to week as different apple varieties ripen. Early season tours feature Gala and Honeycrisp, while later tours showcase Fuji and Granny Smith.

For a more hands-on experience, our U-pick and Demo events combine picking with cider pressing. The October 1st U-pick and Demo 1 PM -3PM is perfect for families who want to fill a bag and learn how cider is made. We also offer a later afternoon session for those who prefer cooler temperatures.

No matter which event you choose, we are confident you will leave with a deeper appreciation for where your food comes from and the work that goes into every apple. Thank you for supporting local agriculture, and we look forward to welcoming you to Crosscut Farm & Orchard.
