What to Expect on the Fall Farm Tour
Your two-hour guided tour begins with a warm welcome at our check-in area, where you’ll meet your tour leader and receive a brief orientation. From there, we’ll set off on a leisurely walk through the orchard and farmstead, stopping at key points to share stories, answer questions, and demonstrate the seasonal work that keeps Crosscut thriving. The pace is relaxed and family-friendly, with plenty of opportunities to pause for photos, take in the views, and enjoy the crisp autumn air.
One of the highlights is the apple cider pressing demonstration. You’ll see how we turn freshly harvested apples into sweet, unfiltered cider using our traditional press. The process is simple but satisfying: whole apples are washed, ground into a coarse mash, and then pressed under pressure to extract every drop of juice. Depending on the day, you might even get to lend a hand turning the crank. We’ll talk about the different apple varieties we grow, why some are better for cider than others, and how the flavor changes from early to late season.
The short introduction to Apple Farming covers the basics of orchard care throughout the year. You’ll learn about pruning in winter, blossom thinning in spring, pest and disease management in summer, and the careful timing of harvest in fall. We’ll explain how we use integrated pest management and other sustainable practices to keep our trees healthy and our fruit safe to eat. You’ll leave with a deeper appreciation for what it takes to grow a great apple.

After the structured portion of the tour, you’re welcome to explore the picnic site at your own pace. Bring a lunch or snack and enjoy it under the shade of our old maple trees, or simply relax and soak in the scenery. The picnic area is included with your admission and is available for the remainder of the tour window.
Planning Your Visit
To make the most of your time at Crosscut, we recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before your reservation time. This gives you a buffer for parking, checking in, and using the restroom before the tour begins. Remember that all guests must be parked and checked in 10 minutes prior to the start time, as stated in the Important Info. Late arrivals may not be able to join the group once it has departed.
Dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. The tour covers uneven ground, grass, and gravel paths, so sturdy footwear is a must. Layers are a good idea in September, as mornings can be cool and afternoons warm. Sunscreen and a hat are also recommended, even on partly cloudy days. If rain is in the forecast, bring a light rain jacket—we run tours rain or shine unless conditions are unsafe.
Parking is free and located near the main entrance. Follow the signs to the designated tour parking area. After parking, proceed to the check-in table where you’ll show your order confirmation (either on your phone or printed). The order number is all you need; no paper tickets will be sent. Once checked in, you’ll receive a brief safety overview and meet your tour group.

If you’re interested in apple picking, remember that it is not included in the tour fee. You can purchase a half peck bag on site for $20 using cash or credit card. Picking is available after the tour, and our staff will direct you to the rows that are open for harvest that day. We recommend bringing your own bag or basket if you plan to pick more than a half peck, as additional bags may be purchased on site.
More About the Orchard and Farm
Crosscut Farm & Orchard has been a part of the local community for generations. Our orchard includes over a dozen apple varieties, from early-season favorites like Gala and Honeycrisp to late-season keepers like Fuji and Arkansas Black. We also grow a selection of pears, plums, and berries, and we keep a small flock of chickens that help with pest control and provide fresh eggs for the farm stand.
In addition to apples, we produce our own cider, apple butter, and other value-added products in small batches. These items are available for purchase at the farm stand during your visit, along with seasonal produce, honey, and handmade goods from local artisans. All sales support the ongoing care of the orchard and our educational programs.
Our farm is committed to sustainable agriculture. We use cover crops, compost, and minimal chemical inputs to maintain soil health and biodiversity. We welcome questions about our practices and are happy to share what we’ve learned with visitors. Whether you’re a home gardener or just curious about where your food comes from, you’ll find plenty to talk about.
