What to Expect on Your Fall Farm Tour

Your two-hour visit is designed to give you a genuine taste of life at Crosscut Farm & Orchard during the most colorful season of the year. The tour moves at a relaxed pace, with plenty of time to ask questions, take photos, and simply enjoy the crisp autumn air. You will be guided by a member of our farm family who knows the orchard intimately — from the first blossom in spring to the final harvest in late October.

The experience begins with a warm welcome at the check-in area near the main barn. After a brief orientation, you will walk as a group to the cider pressing station, where we demonstrate how fresh apples are transformed into sweet, unfiltered cider. This is a hands-on demonstration, and volunteers are often invited to help turn the press. The smell of crushed apples alone is worth the trip.

From there, the tour continues into the orchard itself. You will learn how apple trees are planted, pruned, and cared for throughout the year. We will point out the different varieties growing on our farm and explain why some apples are better for eating fresh while others shine in pies or sauce. Depending on the season, you may see fruit still hanging on the branches or the first leaves beginning to turn. The tour concludes back at the picnic area, where you are welcome to spread out a blanket and enjoy your own snacks or purchase cider and apples from the farm stand.

Apple Picking: How It Works on Tour Day

Your tour reservation covers admission only. If you would like to pick apples during your visit, you can purchase a half peck bag on site for $20. We accept both cash and credit cards at the farm stand. The half peck bag holds roughly 5–6 pounds of apples, which is enough for a couple of pies or a week of healthy snacking. One bag is usually plenty for two adults and a child to share, but you are welcome to buy additional bags if you want to stock up.

Apple picking takes place in designated rows that are clearly marked by our staff. We will point you toward the varieties that are ready for harvest on the day of your tour. Please remember that only apples you place in your purchased bag may leave the orchard. We ask that you handle the fruit gently and avoid climbing trees or shaking branches. Children are welcome to pick, but an adult should always be within arm's reach.

If you prefer not to pick your own, we usually have pre-picked bags available at the farm stand, subject to daily harvest. This is a great option for guests with limited mobility or anyone who wants to grab a bag and head straight to the picnic area.

Planning Your Visit: Parking, Check-In, and What to Bring

Parking is free and located in the gravel lot directly across from the main barn. Signs will direct you from the road. Please arrive early enough to park and check in at least 10 minutes before your reservation time. Late arrivals may miss the group departure and will not be eligible for a refund or transfer, as stated in our ticket policy.

Check-in is simple: show your order confirmation email — the order number is all we need — and our staff will mark your group as present. You do not need to print anything. If you purchased multiple tickets under one order, the entire group can check in together. We recommend having the confirmation pulled up on your phone before you reach the table to keep the line moving.

Dress for the weather and for walking on uneven ground. Closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended, as the orchard floor can be damp or muddy after rain. A light jacket or sweater is a good idea even on sunny days, since the orchard can be breezy. Sunscreen and hats are wise in early fall. You are welcome to bring a water bottle and a small backpack, but please leave pets at home — only service animals are permitted on the tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I bring a stroller or wagon? The tour route is mostly on mowed grass and packed dirt paths. A sturdy stroller with large wheels can work, but a wagon is often easier. Please be aware that the ground may be uneven in places.
  • Is the tour accessible for wheelchairs or walkers? We make every effort to accommodate guests with mobility needs. The cider pressing area and picnic site are on level ground. The orchard walk itself has some gentle slopes. If you have concerns, please contact us before booking and we will do our best to advise you.
  • What happens if it rains? The tour runs rain or shine. In the event of severe weather (thunderstorms, high winds), we may cancel for safety. If we cancel, you will receive a refund to your original payment method. We do not offer refunds for light rain or overcast skies.
  • Can I buy food on site? We sell fresh apple cider, apples, and sometimes honey and baked goods at the farm stand. We do not have a full kitchen, so plan to bring your own picnic if you want a full meal. There are picnic tables near the barn and a few scattered around the orchard edge.
  • Are restrooms available? Yes, portable restrooms are located near the parking area and are available throughout the event.

About Crosscut Farm & Orchard

Crosscut Farm & Orchard is a family-owned operation that has been growing apples and welcoming visitors for more than three decades. We are not a commercial theme park — we are a working farm, and that is exactly how we like it. Our tours are led by people who actually work the land, so the information you hear comes from real experience, not a script.

We believe in keeping things simple: good fruit, fresh air, and honest work. Our fall tours are one of the few times each year when we open the orchard to the public, and we take that responsibility seriously. We want every guest to leave with a deeper appreciation for where their food comes from and a smile on their face.

If you enjoy this tour, you may also be interested in our other fall events, including the September 16, 10 am – 12 pm Fall Farm Tour or the October 1st U-pick and Demo 1 PM – 3 PM. Each date offers the same core experience with slight variations depending on what is ripe and which members of our team are leading the walk.
